Guardian bells, also known as gremlin bells or spirit bells, are small decorative bells attached to motorcycles as protective charms. Their primary purpose is to ward off evil spirits, often referred to as “gremlins,” believed to cause mechanical issues and misfortune for riders.
Origins and History:
The tradition of using guardian bells dates back to World War II. Royal Air Force pilots would hang bells in their cockpits to combat “gremlins,” mischievous creatures thought to cause aircraft malfunctions. After the war, motorcyclists adopted this practice, believing that attaching a bell to their bikes would protect them from similar mischievous entities on the road.
Legend:
According to the legend, when a guardian bell is attached to a motorcycle, evil road spirits become trapped inside. The constant ringing drives these spirits insane, causing them to lose their grip and fall to the ground, thereby preventing them from causing harm to the rider.
Tradition:
It’s customary for guardian bells to be given as gifts from friends or loved ones. This act is believed to enhance the bell’s protective powers. Once gifted, the bell should not be purchased or removed by the recipient, as doing so is thought to negate its protective qualities.
